The Jazz is Back in Punta del Este

Today marks the arrival of numerous international Jazz musicians to Punta del Este for the 14th annual International Jazz Festival.

The two day festival at the open air amphitheater of La Pataia begins tomorrow, Monday the 19th of January and ends on Tuesday the 20th. The music starts at 8:00 pm and Jazz_festival uruguayentrance costs 880 pesos.

The evening will be divided into two musical sets. The first set will have a large Latin influence. Argentine singer Sofia Rei Koutsovitis is scheduled to perform, and she will be accompanied by Columbian drummer Samuel Torres. Argentine guitarist Frederico Dannemann will be coming in from Chile to perform.

The second set will feature Cuban musicians from the United States, the Yosvany Terry Quarte. They will play classic Jazz tunes. The quartet boasts all the elements of a traditional Jazz band: saxophone, drums, bass, and piano.

Tuesday will see a Chilean quartet: Christian Gálvez Cuarteto. They are expected to please audiences as Christian is an extremely talented young musician.

Tuesdays second set of the evening brings to the stage Ignacio Labrada, a young Uruguayan pianist, Osvaldo Fattoruso and Guillermo Delgado, an Argentine bass player. They will be joined by drummer Samuel Torres and Sofia Rei Koutsovitis.

Tickets can be purchased in Red Uts, at the Palacio de la música, in CD Warehouse and at the ticket office of La Pataia. For those who can’t attend, the performances will be replayed on Babel 97.1 fm on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Ticket prices are down from last year (they were 1000 pesos and now they are 880) due to the difficult economic situation of the public. With 15 artists coming from 5 countries, this is one mixing of musicians I sure wouldn’t want to miss.

The festival, which was originally scheduled for the course of 4 days (January 8–11) was thought originally to be cancelled, due to the current financial and economic crisis in the world, as well as the purchase of La Pataia. Francisco Yobino, the founder, producer and general director of the festival was very distressed about cancelling after over a decade of uninterrupted festivals.

However, the show must go on.

I’m not going to make it to Punta del Este for the show. Does anyone know if it is really going to happen? A friend told me it was, but… you never know with these things.
