Time for a mini-Spanish lesson!
What does Mansa mean?
What does Brava mean?
Knowing the translations of those words will help you decide which beach, or Playa, you want to visit on the peninsula of Punta del Este, Uruguay.
On the west side of the peninsula we have Playa Mansa, the calm beach where the waves
roll gently onto the shore and fishermen sit out on the water in their colorful boats hoping for a great catch. Seagulls abound and the tranquil waters make a great place for young children to wade in the water.
On the opposite side of the peninsula, facing the east, we have Playa Brava. Here the surf is strong and the waves are high.
The strong wind drums up the waters, creating a more wild sea. This beach is perfect for the adventuresome type looking to surf, boogie board, windsurf, or just get thrown about by the waves.
So, any guesses as to what Mansa and Brava mean? Hint: The words reflect the properties of the beaches they identify with.
Give up? Or have you already picked up your dictionary?
