Uruguay represents one of the strongest supporters of Obama in South America.
From May to September 2008 Gallup Polls conducted surveys in 70 countries to see who the world preferred to see elected into the Presidential office in the United States.
Uruguay had one of the strongest responses in favor of Obama, with 39% expressing their personal support for his campaign. In the lowest percentages in South America, only 7% support McCain. The other 55% are undecided.
Interesting enough, Uruguay is pretty confident that they won’t be particularly affected by the election of either Obama or McCain.
Only 27% feel the election will make a difference in Uruguay, and while 34% feel it won’t, 39% are undecided. Many realize that the direction of the United States foreign relations is now more focused on the Middle East than anywhere else, despite Hugo Chávez’s recent actions. Many in Uruguay feel it will take a lot more for the United States to focus their attention southward again, and even then, it is doubtful their gaze will go as far south as Uruguay.
But how will the Uruguay economy be affected by the election of either Obama or McCain? it depends largely in part on how the United States economy fairs under the rule of either one. One thing is for sure, the better the United States economy is doing, the better the Uruguayan economy is doing. Thankfully, even with the United States economy in a state of recession, Uruguay still sees a large amount of foreign interest in its tourism industry and investment opportunities from a number of European countries.
